Yorktown, March 5 ‹ The York County Public Library’s Second Saturdays at Seven Concert Series welcomes Sheryl Warner and the Southside Homewreckers to the Tabb Library on Saturday, March 10, 2007, at 7 PM. Their performance, Virginia Roots Music, pays tribute to the musical traditions of Virginia during the 1920s and 1930s, focusing on the jubilee–style gospel quartets of the Tidewater area, the string–band music of southwestern Virginia, and the Piedmont or East Coast blues style. This multi–media show is based on the Library of Virginia’s recent exhibition Virginia Roots Music: Creating and Conserving Tradition.

York County To Dedicate New Wetlands Area With Public Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Nov. 8

Yorktown--A dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony will mark the completion of a project that created a wetlands area at York County‘s Charles E. Brown Park, across from the Naval Weapons Laboratory on Route 238 (Old Williamsburg Road). The ceremony will be held at the Park on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 2:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Wetlands are areas that are covered by water or are waterlogged long enough to influence the types of soil and plants that grow there. Wetlands benefit the environment by filtering water carried to it by runoff, reduce severity of floods downstream by retaining water and releasing it during drier periods, and by establishing food, breeding grounds, and resting areas for wildlife including some rare and endangered species.

The County decided to develop the new wetlands area, formally named Wetlands Interpretive Sanctuary for Education (WISE), when a previously forested wetlands was filled to construct Tabb Library in 1998. After the site was chosen in 2001, the area was cleaned up, the site regraded, and plants selected that would flourish in a wetlands. Numerous agencies, including many community volunteers, participated in the cleanup, design, development, and planting to create the wetlands and surrounding nature trail.
