“It was fun, and I loved being able to work from home and take a break in the morning and go walk and come back and just work straight through the day. It worked out well. The hard part was, and I know a lot of people have done this kind of thing, which is, you either have to branch out and get bigger and bring other people on, or you have to keep right where you are. There’s no good in between. So I did it for a year, then Governor Warner took office, and I got to work there.”
We asked her if she knew Mark Warner before he became Governor. We thought it was possible because he ran Doug Wilder’s successful campaign for Governor, and she eventually worked for the Wilder Admin-
istration as Deputy Secretary of Education. “I knew [Warner] through a happenstance in the late 1980s,” she replied. “Friends of friends—and I had just met him before and knew him a little bit, but I’ve never done any campaigning or anything like that. It was more that they were looking for people who worked for government before. Some of them were gray hairs which is kind of disconcerting, because that’s what I am,” she laughed, “people who had been around and knew the process.”
I have known Suzette from the time she graduated from college, and have followed her career path with great interest. Her abilities and personal warmth have taken her to some very important and interesting positions where she has been able to positively influence public policy. Her interpersonal skills, coupled with great leadership skills, backed by a fine mind and
a desire to serve through government or government related positions have brought her to her current position of local government leadership. We are very fortunate to have her back with the Virginia Municipal League.
