DESCRIPTION: The Virginia Review is the only nonpolitical, professional journal for officials on all levels of state and local government in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Only articles that pertain to or are of interest to those professionals and others who work with them to make governing of Virginia the best it can be will be considered for publication. The readership includes public and private sector individuals, as well as consultants, students, and interested citizens. We accept only original works that are created for our publication, and will not accept articles that are self serving or promotional. We do not accept press releases as contributions. Previously copyrighted material (images, charts, or text) will not be accepted.
FORMAT & LENGTH: Six to eight pages double spaced (2,500 to 3,500) is a good feature article length. Shorter articles may be called for if they are for a specific placement in the magazine, but in general, most articles are at least six pages, double spaced long.
All submissions should be in Word with high resolution images if digital images are used. Black and white or color photographs with good contrast are also acceptable. Do not e-mail any images or text. For best overall results, digital photos should be saved as tif files in the highest resolution possible (minimum of 300 dpi). You may send in traditional photos (hard copy), however we have been unsuccessful scanning prints from inkjet printers. Please do not include graphics or images within the body of the text.
REQUIRED INFORMATION: Contributors are required to submit a signed release form, along with a disk, a paper copy of the article, and a photo of the contributor with each submission. We copyright each magazine with the Library of Congress Office of Copyrights, so your release ensures that we can publish your article. Reprints or excerpts may be ordered, or permission given if a request is made in writing previous to any additional use of the material.
Send all materials prior to copy deadline together. Do not send materials separately.
CHECKLIST: Enclose the following with your submission:
- Title of article;
- ContributorŐs full name and title (copy of business card when possible);
- Signed release form;
- Disk or CD with article saved in Word;
- Image or photo of contributor plus any other graphics needed to accompany text; and,
- Paper copy of article, double spaced.
All articles submitted will be considered for publication. However, not all will be accepted because of form or content. Contributors with questions are encouraged to e-mail or call. If an article has been accepted for publication, because of space restrictions, we cannot always guarantee in which issue it will appear. Contributors receive five complimentary copies of the magazine in which the article appears.
